About this book
The account says that a tartan previously known as Strathallan appears to have been adopted by the Earl and some other branches of the family. The Ogilvy design came to have that customary designation over time, and the ground has sometimes been made blue instead of green. The accompanying Fraser reproduction is taken from a specimen in a collection formed about 1790, where the pattern is first recorded.
Different Fraser families appear originally to have had their own special designs, though every important section except Lovat has long recognised the illustrated pattern. The discussion of dress says that various references suggest the trews and the belted plaid were sometimes worn together.
