About this book
Practical Ethics is by William De Witt Hyde, D. D., President of Bowdoin College. The preface says that treatises abound which are exhaustive in their presentation of ethical theory, while books are plenty which give good moral advice with great elaborateness of detail. The first chapter, Food and Drink, starts from the statement that the foundations of life, and therefore the first concerns of conduct, are food and drink.
The book says that vice carries its penalty in its own nature, and quotes Plato: virtue is the health and beauty and well-being of the soul, and vice is the disease and weakness and deformity of the soul. On indifference to others, the book says the Stoics boasted of the completeness of their indifference, and calls the device essentially weak and cowardly.
