About this book
The Art of Logical Thinking, by William Walker Atkinson, sets out to explain the underlying working principles of the laws of reasoning. The explanation of abstraction describes setting aside a quality or attribute as a distinct object of thought, using the example of thinking about strength independently of a lion. Jevons is quoted as explaining deductive reasoning through the gathering of truth contained in premises and its expression in another proposition called the conclusion.
Jevons's quoted distinction describes inductive inference as gathering the truth of general propositions from facts observed as happening in the surrounding world. The discussion of partial proof calls it fallacious to argue that a man has been guilty of drunkenness merely because someone proves that he was seen entering a saloon.
