About this book
Pragmatism and Idealism discusses the main characteristics of Pragmatism and its relations to ordinary and philosophical thinking, including some of its confusions and difficulties. The discussion suggests that Pragmatism seems to rest on some broader tendencies in ancient and modern thought aiming at a dynamic interpretation of reality. The criticism argues that the lack of an objective or rational order leaves the pragmatist philosophy liable to charges of subjectivism and irrationality.
The ethical discussion calls the ideal of Absolutism too static and says Absolutism provides no material for new goals and ideals. The account of Sidgwick's objection to Utilitarianism says that study of the actual origin of moral distinctions by no means confirms it.
