About this book

Priestess of the Flame, by Sewell Peaslee Wright, is introduced with the words that Commander John Hanson recounts the extraordinary story of Liane, Priestess of the Flame. The narrator says that protests regarding the "disparaging" comments made in previous tales of the Special Patrol Service, regarding women, have rather amused the narrator. Correy answers the narrator's question "Trouble aboard?" with "Plenty of it, sir!" and "A stowaway!" Correy blurts out that it would not be so bad if it were a him, but that it is a she.

Commander Hanson calls the sentry on duty at the exit to ask whether Mr. Hendricks has left the ship, and the sentry says the lady came back, saying she had word from the commander, and that she and Mr. Hendricks left a few minutes later. A note signed Hendricks says, "I am leaving with Liane. I am sorry. It had to be."
