About this book
Principles of Decorative Design examines the ornament of particular peoples and historic ages, along with the meanings expressed by individual forms. The discussion suggests that a mummy-case may carry a conventional drawing of the Egyptian lotus, or blue water-lily, probably repeated on the same case. The discussion characterises Egyptian ornamentation through length of line, firmness of drawing, severity of form, and subtlety of curve.
The ceiling advice allows a properly treated central ornament to be very large without looking heavy. The instructions require ornament on a flat ceiling to remain flat and avoid a fictitious representation of relief. The room decoration should suit its architecture, using new ornament in the spirit of past forms rather than copying them servilely.
