About this book

From her balcony at Frascati, Fay, the English Duchess of Colle Alto, looks towards Rome and thinks of Michael Carstairs. Married to an older duke, she finds her life dull until Michael's arrival brings renewed excitement. Mary Cholmondeley's narrator studies Fay's need for admiration with a sharp eye, showing how her wish to please can coexist with little awareness of the hurt she causes.

The novel gives its prison imagery a moral as well as a physical meaning. Michael is confined, while Fay struggles over whether to speak about what she knows. Her conversation with Magdalen brings silence, conscience and the hope of peace into conflict. Elsewhere, Wentworth's thoughts about courtship expose another kind of absorption in oneself.
