About this book
Proverbs and Their Lessons, by Richard Chenevix Trench, is the substance of lectures delivered to young men’s societies at Portsmouth and elsewhere. The preface says the lectures were never delivered as a complete course, but only one here and two there, as matter gradually grew under the writer’s hands.
The text says of a French proverb, “It is easy to go afoot, when one leads one’s horse by the bridle.” The text says it is easy to stoop from state, when that state may be resumed at will. The writer says he will now bring his final lecture to its close and asks his hearers to draw out for themselves those further lessons.
