About this book
A social visit becomes an ordeal of hesitation in the opening poem of T. S. Eliot's 1917 collection. J. Alfred Prufrock imagines the judgments others might make about his appearance and keeps postponing the words he wants to say. Drawing rooms, tea, street smoke and references to art sit beside his uneasy inner speech. The repeated phrases and shifts of image make his uncertainty audible, rather than explaining it from a distance.
The other poems extend that attention to speech, memory and city life. In "Portrait of a Lady," polite conversation about music and friendship meets a speaker's private resistance. "Preludes" moves through wet streets, coffee stands and rented rooms, while "Rhapsody on a Windy Night" lets street lamps prompt broken recollections. Readers interested in poetry shaped around restless thought and ordinary urban details will find short pieces whose voices often hesitate, contradict themselves or turn suddenly toward an unexpected image.
