About this book
Rain, lamplight and crowded streets give Conrad Aiken's long poem its opening rhythm. A dreamer moves through a city of towers, seeking the thoughts hidden behind its many faces and windows. Others watch from above, hurry in from the shore or return to the company of strangers. Published in 1920 and subtitled A Symphony, The House of Dust is arranged in four parts, with shifting voices and recurring images linking its scenes.
Private recollection interrupts the movement of the crowd. A man painting flowers on cups and plates finds memories of love, marriage and ordinary mishaps within his designs. Elsewhere, snow and the sound of a clock accompany reflections on death and the lives passing through the city. The poem offers readers a way to follow how weather, sounds and familiar objects become expressions of inward life. Its changes of speaker bring individual memories into contact with a larger, restless urban world.
