About this book
William Hirsch's psychological study, in an English translation of the second German edition printed in London in 1897, is dedicated to Dr. E. Mendel, professor of nervous and mental diseases at the University of Berlin. A section headed 'Art and Insanity' says that a psychological judgment of a man needs a double estimate of his mind, as a personal matter and as a link in the chain of humanity.
The pages sampled discuss how new ideas in art meet resistance at first, and quote Nordau on people who admire everything new. Other passages take up whether there is such a thing as scientific genius, citing Jürgen Bona Meyer, and recall that Alfieri never got past the fourth proposition of Euclid and that Goethe was reproached for his lack of mathematical knowledge. A passage on epidemic convulsions in German convents in the sixteenth century quotes a report by Calmeil.
