About this book
The contents list chapters on services in the United States Army, the army of Northern Virginia, the surrender, life as a private citizen, the presidency of Washington College, family affairs, mountain rides, letters to sons and failing health. The text quotes letters to a wife and to children.
In one passage a letter describes a number of little girls in white frocks running about, twenty-three of nearly the same size, and a man who appears with the twenty-fourth in his arms. A letter dated Lexington, Virginia, February 23, 1866, addressed to Mrs. Davis, says that silence and patience on the part of the South were the true course. Another passage, in the first person, describes a hot journey by packet and railroad cars and says that Dr. Buckler examined the writer for two hours.
