About this book

A Life of Gen. Robert E. Lee by John Esten Cooke has a contents list whose first part is Lee's Early Life. The contents list also names parts called In Front of Richmond and On the Chickahominy. Two sayings under the name Lee read "Duty is the sublimest word in our language" and "Human virtue should be equal to human calamity."

The account of Brown says Brown and his confederates had shut themselves up in an engine-house of the town, with a number of their prisoners. Lee then proceeded to assault, with a force of marines, the stronghold to which Brown had retreated. The narrative describes Hill meeting the Federal attack with his habitual resolution, while one of General Ewell's divisions, under Rodes, came from the Carlisle road, running northward from Gettysburg, to his assistance.
