About this book
Recollections of a Long Life is by Theodore L. Cuyler. The contents list includes, among others, Boyhood and College Life, Hymn-Writers I Have Known, and The Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. The text describes the good old poet showing the narrator Rydal Water, a little lake about a mile long, the beautiful church, and, beyond it, Grassmere.
The narrator says Hall was so conscientious in his teetotalism that, though tired and thirsty, he never would touch the weak, common wine of the country. The narrator says they once went up to Olney and sat in Cowper's summer house, and entered John Newton's church. The speaker says "My ministry began in a very small church" and advises "Let no young minister covet a large parish at the outset."
