About this book

From Fort Wood at Chattanooga, Charles A. Dana watches troops advance and sends a telegram to Secretary Stanton while the day's action is still unfolding. That combination of observation and reporting runs through his Civil War recollections. Serving as Assistant Secretary of War from 1863 to 1865, Dana describes military campaigns alongside the people and decisions of the War Department. His chapters move between army headquarters, Washington offices and encounters with Lincoln, Grant and other commanders.

The account draws on wartime reports and private letters as well as memory. At Chattanooga, precise timings, terrain and troop movements give the narrative the texture of a witness's dispatch; elsewhere, the contents promise character sketches, supply problems and political disagreements. Readers interested in how information travelled between the battlefield and the government can follow both the practical business of directing a war and Dana's personal judgments of its leaders.
