About this book
The study examines Rembrandt’s etching technique through a print in the Smithsonian Institution’s collection, Landscape with a hay barn and a flock of sheep. The print is in black ink, signed and dated 1650. The description follows sheep, a shepherd, a creek bank, a distant town and cows, with a horse noticed only after the composition has been circled.
The technical discussion judges a single acid etch of the entire plate without stopping-out probable unless the evidence is attributed to a very long coincidence. The account explains that horizon lines on the left were added after several proofs and distinguish the recorded first and second states of the print.
