About this book
The Standard Galleries - Holland is a book by Esther Singleton. The text says that Burger very wittily said that La Vache qui se mire was a chef d'œuvre, and not a hors d'œuvre, like the Bull. The text reports that Sir Joshua Reynolds noted cattle finely painted by Potter, remarkable for the strong reflection of one of them in the water, dated 1648.
The text says Julius Quinckhard (1736-76) was a pupil of his father, Jan Maurits, but soon abandoned art for commerce. The text names The Drinker, by David Ryckaert (1612-77), a pupil of his father, Maerten Ryckaert, who formed himself on Teniers, Brouwer, and Ostade. The text describes a man in a brown coat with red sleeves and a red cap seated at a table with a pewter mug in one hand and a pipe in the other.
