About this book
Francesca da Rimini is headed as a tragedy in the volume Representative Plays by American Dramatists, 1856-1911. A sketch of George Henry Boker (1823-1890) says his name suggests a coterie of friendships. The sketch names Bayard Taylor, Richard Henry Stoddard and Charles Godfrey Leland as men in whose published letters and impressions many pleasing aspects of Boker's temperament and character are embedded.
A passage says Boker's correspondence with Stoddard began in a letter dated September 5, 1849, announcing overtures made by the London Haymarket Theatre for his new tragedy, Anne Boleyn. A character named Ritta says that fagot, axe and gallows have their uses and give the lookers-on a deal of harmless sport. A character named Lanciotto asks whether Heaven thundered, calls those he addresses louts, and gives the order Saddle my horse.
