About this book
Venice Preserved: A Tragedy in Five Acts is by Thomas Otway, in a stage version with the stage business, cast of character and costumes. The text says it was produced at Booth's Theatre on September 7th, 1874, in a revised version. The text says the tragedy is believed to have been originally acted about the year 1682.
The text says that in its unexpurgated state Venice Preserved leaves an impression far less favorable to the genius, as well as the moral sense of the author, than in its present abridged and rectified shape. In the language of Campbell, the text says Pierre is a miserable conspirator, as Otway first painted him, impelled to treason by his love of a courtesan and his jealousy of Antonio. Scene IV is set in St. Mark's Place, with a scaffold in the back ground and a wheel.
