About this book

Knickerbocker's History of New York is by Washington Irving, in a complete edition of two volumes. The contents give an Introduction, The Author's Apology and an Account of the Author, followed by numbered books of chapters.

One passage describes Mr. Knickerbocker, called our author, visiting Albany, where Mr. John Cook entertains him at a circulating library and gives him two old books, the earliest edition of the Heidelberg Catechism and Adrian Vander Donck's account of the New Netherlands. He goes on to Scaghtikoke, where his relations receive him warmly. A footnote quotes a 1659 record on seawant, or wampum, beads made from shells, and another passage shows a leader thrusting a summons into his pocket, taking snuff and promising an answer the next morning before calling his burgomasters together.
