About this book
Research Methods in Ecology is presented as a handbook for investigators and advanced students, giving an account of methods used by the author in studies of vegetation over the previous eight years. The discussion explains competition through a plant’s effects on physical factors and the influence of those modified factors on adjacent plants. The account describes increased leaf surface reducing the light and heat available to neighboring plants while requiring more water and other nutritive material.
An experiment uses weighed plants in battery jars, with rubber cloth attached to prevent evaporation and repeated weighing to determine transpiration in relation to water absorbed. The treatment of succession includes drained or dried soils and attributes present drying of lakes and ponds to artificial drainage or climatic changes.
