About this book
The Principal Species of Wood, subtitled Their Characteristic Properties, is a book by Charles H. Snow. The preface calls the work a brief untechnical presentation of general features characterizing economically important species of wood. The preface says the work is the result of notes originally brought together from many already existing sources and later augmented, and verified so far as possible for the present use, by personal observation.
A list of sections includes, among others, Spruce (Picea), Douglas Spruce (Pseudotsuga), Fir (Abies) and Hemlock (Tsuga). The text says the buckeye and horse chestnut are species of the same genus, and that the name buckeye is generally applied to such species as are natives of North America. The text says the woods of the two resemble one another in that they are soft, straight-grained, easily worked, and decay rapidly when exposed.
