About this book

Studies of Trees is by J. J. Levison, M.F., Lecturer on Ornamental and Shade Trees, Yale University Forest School. The preface says it is believed there is still need for an all-round book, adapted to the beginner, which gives in a brief and not too technical way the most important facts concerning the identification, structure and uses of our more common trees. The entry for The Pitch Pine gives its range as Eastern United States and says it grows in the poorest and sandiest soils where few other trees will grow.

The entry for The Fall Webworm says the caterpillars congregate in colonies and surround themselves with a web, and that cutting off the webs or burning them on the twigs is the most practical remedy. The remedies listed for caterpillars are to collect the winter nests from October to April and burn them, and to spray the trees in early May and especially in August with arsenate of lead.
