About this book

The book is The Complete Plays of Richard Steele, edited by G. A. Aitken with an introduction and notes. The contents list names, among others, The Funeral, The Lying Lover and The Tender Husband. The introduction says that it is as an essayist rather than a dramatist that men now think of Steele, and that his best work is to be found in the periodical papers which he edited.

The text says that in the earlier part of 1705, probably soon after the production of The Tender Husband, Steele married a widow, Margaret Stretch, whose maiden name was Ford. In a play scene, the Aunt says that the Niece will learn more wit from Mr. Pounce in an hour than in a thousand of her foolish books in an age.
