About this book

First Plays is by A. A. Milne, with a dedication reading To My Mother. The contents list names, among others, Wurtzel-Flummery, The Lucky One and The Boy Comes Home. The introduction says that five plays were written, in the order in which they appear now, during the years 1916 and 1917.

A character named Crawshaw reads out a letter saying that under the will of the late Mr. Antony Clifton he is a beneficiary to the extent of £50,000, and that a trifling condition is attached: that he should take the name of Wurzel-Flummery. A character named Emily says that jam is a thing the Army wants. Fiddler says dreamily that it is not a nightingale but a girl, and good Master Johannes, who is addressed in the same lines, answers that it is a girl they want, who must put the red feather in her cap.

Milne was an assistant editor at Punch and a successful playwright before the bear, and he spent the remainder of his life mildly resenting what the bear did to that reputation. Winnie-the-Pooh appeared in 1926 and The House at Pooh Corner in 1928, both drawn by E. H.
