About this book
Richard Wagner His Life and His Dramas is subtitled A Biographical Study of the Man and an Explanation of His Work. W. J. Henderson, author of The Story of Music, says in the preface that the book is meant to give Wagner lovers a single book that meets all their needs, with the story of the composer's life and his artistic aims. The book is dedicated to Robert Edwin Bonner, and its musical illustrations come with MP3 and MusicXML links in this edition.
In one passage Wagner is twenty-one and reading Heinse, Laube, Börne and Heine, and in the summer of 1834, on holiday at Teplitz, he sketches the plot of his next opera, Das Liebesverbot. In the autumn he takes a post as conductor at a small theatre in Magdeburg. Another passage retells the story of Tannhäuser, in which a staff buds and blossoms, and sets it beside the contest of minnesingers at the Wartburg in 1204 and the poem called the Wartburgkrieg.
