About this book

At fourteen, Robert Falconer begins to question his own memory of his father. A half-forgotten Sunday returns to him: reading to his grandmother, opening the door to a shabby visitor, and passing the afternoon among books and household sounds. George MacDonald places this inward-looking schoolboy in a Scottish setting, where a cold garret offers room for thought and the smallest domestic detail can carry emotional weight.

The novel follows boyhood, youth and manhood, combining family concerns with Christian reflection. In a later scene, Robert plays music while Mysie listens, and Ericson sings a northern ballad before recounting its strange coastal legend. Scots dialogue, music and storytelling give the characters distinct ways of expressing feeling. Readers interested in the formation of a young person's inner life will find a story attentive to recollection, belief and the affection that passes between people.
