About this book
A glass earring recovered from a gutter becomes a small treasure for Gibbie, an eight-year-old boy wandering a grey Scottish city. George MacDonald begins with the sights, smells and textures of street life: granite walls, autumn mist and the enticing display in a baker's shop. This novel follows a child's growth, with childhood and orphanhood among its central concerns. Its Scottish setting extends from the town into the Highlands.
A later scene places Gibbie with Janet and Robert during a fierce storm. He releases a cow from a flooded byre and leads her out, while Janet brings her religious convictions to bear on their difficult walk toward shelter. Her concern for an old umbrella gives the danger an unexpectedly domestic touch. Scots dialogue, close attention to ordinary possessions and reflections on faith make the book a distinctive choice for readers interested in childhood and everyday kindness.
