About this book
Family history and the sound of New England give this portrait of Robert Frost its starting point. Gorham Bert Munson follows the Frost family through English ancestry and settlements in Maine and New Hampshire, connecting the poet with generations of local life. The opening also recalls a young Frost asking his grandfather for twenty years in which to prove himself as a poet, rather than the single year offered.
The later account brings Frost into classrooms and conversations at Amherst, Michigan and other colleges. Munson describes an informal teacher who encourages enjoyment in reading and independence in writing, then imagines an evening visit that conveys his manner and conversation. Biography and literary criticism meet in this study of the relationship between a poet's background, personality and work. It offers a view of Frost through family stories, educational life and the everyday exchanges surrounding his poetry.
