About this book
Chapter I of J. Walker McSpadden's Robin Hood is called "How Robin Hood Became an Outlaw". It begins with ballad verses about a good yeoman and sets the story in the days of King Harry the Second of England, when certain forests in the north country were kept for the King's hunting and guarded by his Foresters. The book has twenty-four chapters.
In one passage an archery contest for a golden arrow draws the gentry and the crowd. A beggar-man in a hood, who is Rob, shoots beside a muscular man with a green bandage over one eye. The Sheriff, his wife and their daughter sit in the central box, the Bishop of Hereford in the next, and Maid Marian near her father the Earl of Huntingdon. In another, Robin kneels before Queen Eleanor with Little John, Will Scarlet and Allan-a-Dale. In a third, a horn sounds in a glade and a party of knights comes into view.
