About this book

An abbot and his friars stand in the abbey-chapel of Rubygill to solemnise the marriage of Matilda Fitzwater, daughter of the Baron of Arlingford, and Robert Fitz-Ooth, Earl of Locksley and Huntingdon. Sir Ralph Montfaucon tells the friars that the earl hunted the king's deer, resisted royal authority, and withheld payment of certain moneys to the abbot of Doncaster.

Matilda receives warning of an assault design through a blunt arrow, which the narrator says must have been sent either by some secret friend in the prince's camp or by a vigorous archer beyond it. Prince John goes to sleep expecting another day to place the fair culprit at his mercy. Robin welcomes a knight to a feast, where a hundred foresters await dinner and a portly monk sits between Little John and Scarlet.
