Robinson Crusoe's Money is a book by David Ames Wells. The full title continues Or, the Remarkable Financial Fortunes and Misfortunes of a Remote Island Community. The text quotes the words "I smiled at myself at the sight of all this money" and the line "One of these knives is worth all this heap".
The text says that the money, which is popularly regarded as the symbol and the concentration of all wealth, had, under the circumstances, neither utility, value, nor price. The text says that when the people got the bonds, they put them carefully away for the sake of the interest that would accumulate upon them, but that when they got the bluebacks, they were at first at a loss to know what to do with them. The text compares those who had lost much of real wealth to the dog in the fable, which let go of the meat in crossing a stream for the sake of grasping its shadow.
