About this book
Roman History, Books I-III is by Titus Livius, translated by John Henry Freese, Alfred John Church and William Jackson Brodribb. A section headed Livy's History says that, of the lost treasures of classical literature, it is doubtful whether any are more to be regretted than the missing books of Livy. The contents for Book III name the decemvirate and list Cincinnatus called from his fields and made dictator, the tyranny of the decemvirs and the death of Virginia.
A section headed The Period of the Kings says that it is generally admitted that, after the taking of Troy, the Greeks forbore to exercise the full rights of war in the case of two, Æneas and Antenor. A passage about a sudden paralysis says someone carried into the senate-house deprived of the use of all his limbs is reported to have returned home on his own feet. A speaker urges young men to show themselves superior to the infantry in valour, as they already are their superiors in honour and in rank.
