About this book

A. H. J. Greenidge's Roman Public Life was printed at London in 1901. The title page names him as lecturer and late Fellow of Hertford College and lecturer in ancient history at Brasenose College, Oxford. His preface says the work aims to trace the growth of the Roman constitution and to explain its working in the developed Republic and the Principate, touching on all the important aspects of public life.

One passage deals with the Senate and foreign envoys, noting that the approach of the suspected Eumenes of Pergamus in 166 B.C. caused a passing regulation that no kings, the carnivorous animals of Cato, should be received at Rome in person, and that a law of 67 B.C. set aside February for the reception of legations. Another describes the quaestor as the lowest rank in the cursus honorum, shown on coins on a straight-legged chair with a money-bag or money-chest. Numbered footnotes cite Dio Cassius, Mommsen's Staatsrecht, Suetonius and Tacitus.
