Roof and Meadow is by Dallas Lore Sharp, who is also named as the author of A Watcher in the Woods. The contents list names, among others, Birds from a City Roof, The Hunting of the Woodchuck, Three Sermons, Racoon Creek and The Dragon of the Swale. The text describes birds that, along with hawking, get in a great deal of play, tumbling and cloud-coasting over the roofs just as they do above the fields.
The text says the night-hawk, alias bull-bat, does not sing, and that its single note, the only call it has besides a few squeaks, is far from a song. A mother steps gently into a hat, takes one of the squirrels by the neck and lays it down for a firmer hold, and walks over to the basket and drops it tenderly among her other babies. A narrator says he had crossed the path of a swamp black-snake and, judging from the speed and whirl, it was a snake of uncommon size.
