About this book

Bored with a house where everything stays the same, Gimme the Ax sells his belongings and takes his two children to the railway station. Their ticket carries them beyond the ordinary tracks into a country where trains pass over and under one another and balloons grow in the sky. Carl Sandburg's Rootabaga Stories, published in 1922, builds its fairy tales from railroads, farm crops, household objects and names that sound like games.

Elsewhere, three boys meet parasols that return to their owner and a wealthy potato bug whose money is called fleems. Wishes, suspicions and secret ambitions become matters of everyday conversation in these unlikely places. The short stories move through repeated phrases, comic exchanges and sudden changes of scale. Children and adults reading aloud can enjoy the sounds of Sandburg's sentences as well as the strange rules his characters accept without surprise.
