About this book

A noisy welcome at the wharf gives way to an awkward discovery: Rose Campbell and the cousins she once played with are now adults. Returning with Uncle Alec and Phebe, she notices the differences between steady Archie, studious Mac and the admired but unsettled Charlie. Louisa May Alcott's 1876 sequel to Eight Cousins follows a young woman's place within a large family as familiar affection begins to take new forms.

The family comedy carries a serious concern with character. Mac values Phebe's honesty and courage, while Charlie's dramatic appeals force Rose to distinguish strong feeling from conduct she can respect. Her refusal to promise affection before that respect has been earned gives the romance a practical moral question. Readers interested in Alcott's treatment of growing up will find a household full of teasing, competing expectations and conversations about the standards people bring to friendship and love.
