About this book

Early summer leaves Margaret Montfort missing the lively company of her young cousins, Basil and Susan D., who have gone to visit their father. At Fernley House, she and Uncle John look forward to Peggy's arrival after school closes. Margaret plans to teach her housekeeping, while two setter puppies, Nip and Tuck, bring fresh demands and amusement to the household. Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards builds this children's novel around family affection, practical responsibilities and the differing temperaments of young people.

The social life of the house comes through in playful conversation and small acts of care. Hugh, Peggy and the Merryweathers become absorbed in throwing sticks for the puppies, while Margaret also listens to Mrs. Peyton's worries about the unconventional Grace. Readers interested in domestic fiction can find a close view of how kindness works in everyday encounters, alongside the period's expectations about growing up and managing a home.
