About this book

Moving a painting safely can depend on a truck, a guard and a break in the weather. Thomas Carr Howe describes that practical side of recovering looted European art in this memoir, published in 1946. A museum director before his naval service, he travels overseas to join officers protecting cultural monuments and returning displaced collections. The opening follows his hurried travel arrangements and the paperwork needed to reach Europe.

Later scenes show paintings being transferred between vehicles, with works by Veronese and Rubens among the loads. Rain and hail interrupt the work, while mechanical failures delay convoys bound for Munich. Inside the salt mine, a final inspection takes the officers past pictures, sculpture and furniture to unopened cartons. The account gives readers interested in art history a view of recovery as daily work: organizing transport, checking stored objects and managing the people responsible for their care.
