About this book
Imperial authority is breaking apart in China, and sworn loyalties compete with the calculations of commanders and advisers. Guanzhong Luo's historical novel follows the struggle around the declining Han dynasty and the emergence of rival powers. This first volume introduces Liu Pei's compact with Kuan Yü and Chang Fei, placing personal bonds within a much larger contest for territory and rule.
Military success here depends as much on grain, messages and judgment as on fighting. Yüan Shao dismisses advice about Tsʻao Tsʻao's dwindling supplies, then alienates Hsü Yu, who turns toward his old friend in the opposing camp. Such exchanges make strategy and the treatment of counsellors central to the drama. C. H. Brewitt-Taylor's English version preserves a storytelling manner, with verse passages, many named figures and chapters built around schemes, battles and reversals.
