About this book
Sanitary Statistics of Native Colonial Schools and Hospitals is a paper that sets out to show that statistics, capable of affording complete practical results when wanted, have scarcely made a beginning in the colonies. The writer says that after the Colonial Office collected the materials with great labour and no little cost, and the writer reduced them, they are incapable of giving all the beneficial information expected.
The text says the adult natives at many of the colonies are considered specially subject to tubercular diseases, more particularly consumption. The text gives death counts by school, such as three children dying of miasmatic diseases out of a total mortality of 16 in the Natal schools, against one miasmatic death out of a total mortality of 27 in the Canadian schools. A run of figures lists individual schools by name, with entries such as Kohillewatte vernacular school and Slave Island boys school set beside years.
