About this book
Florence Nightingale to Her Nurses is a selection from Miss Nightingale’s addresses to probationers and nurses of the Nightingale School at St. Thomas’s Hospital. The preface says that between 1872 and 1900 Miss Nightingale used, when she was able, to send an annual letter or address to the probationer-nurses of the Nightingale School at St. Thomas’ Hospital. The preface says the addresses were usually read aloud by Sir Harry Verney.
The text says conceit and nursing cannot exist in the same person, any more than new patches on an old garment, and that every year of her service a good Nurse will say I learn something every day. The text says nurses are placed, perhaps here only, on a footing of equality with educated gentlewomen. The text says it is impossible indeed to live in isolation, since we are dependent upon others for the supply of all our wants, and others upon us.
