About this book
School-life at Winchester College is subtitled The Reminiscences of a Winchester Junior under the old régime, 1835-40. The book carries a glossary of words, phrases, and customs peculiar to Winchester College, and is by Robert Blachford Mansfield. The text says the School was divided into three classes, or Books, of which the Præfects formed one, Sixth Book.
The text says that just before School-time a boy was always stationed to watch the arrival of the Master, to give notice by a loud Hiss, upon which there was a general rush up to books. The text says that in five minutes all the Juniors were darting wildly about in all directions, executing orders received from their lords and masters.
