About this book
Scotland's Mark on America is by George Fraser Black. The foreword says it has been said that the Scot is never so much at home as when he is abroad. The contents list Scots in the Presidency, Scots as Cabinet Officers, Scots in the Senate, Scots as Scientists, Scots as Inventors and Scots as Engineers.
A section on Scottish emigration to the American colonies says it came in two streams, one direct from the motherland and the other through the province of Ulster in the north of Ireland. One entry covers David Dale Owen, born in Lanarkshire, who was brought to the United States by his father in 1823 and in 1848 took charge of the Geological Survey of Wisconsin and Iowa. A line from James Anthony Froude says no people so few in number have scored so deep a mark in the world's history as the Scots have done.
