About this book
Scurvy, Past and Present by Alfred F. Hess discusses scurvy epidemics, crop failures, and the dependence of protection from the disease on food supplies. An account reports scurvy after crops failed almost entirely for several years, while a chart compares requisitioned vegetables with quantities actually received by an institution. The discussion attributes dependence on potatoes in winter both to their antiscorbutic potency and, probably quite as much, to the quantity consumed.
The historical account says a severe epidemic among sailors was controlled by fresh vegetables and fruit. A daily lime-juice ration was consequently ordered, and the account describes the disease as appearing only sporadically from that time.
