Sea and Shore is a boys’ adventure novel by Oliver Optic, pen name of William Taylor Adams (1822-1897), the Massachusetts schoolmaster who became one of the most prolific authors of American juvenile fiction, turning out well over a hundred books. His tales of plucky boys at sea and in the wider world sold in the millions and made him a rival of Horatio Alger. Optic’s nautical adventures fed the appetite of nineteenth-century American boyhood.
