About this book
William J. Fitz-Patrick's "Secret Service Under Pitt" works from deeds, ledgers and letters. In one passage he shows from the Registry of Deeds in Dublin that Samuel Turner, "the quondam spy at Hamburg", signed a conveyance of lands in Clare on February 25, 1801, and that he was trustee of a marriage settlement. The Book of Secret Service Money records a payment on July 8, 1801 "per Mr. Turner to Chapman in Cork".
Other passages bring in Tandy and the legal adviser McNally. A footnoted section tells of the man known as Count or Colonel O'Kelly, who owned the racehorse Eclipse. Chapter VI is titled "The Mask Torn Off at Last", and the notes cite a letter from Camden to Portland of December 2, 1797, and Froude's quotation from a letter to Downshire.
