About this book
Pickle the Spy, subtitled Or, The Incognito of Prince Charles, is by Andrew Lang. The preface describes a woful History that began in a study of the Pelham Papers in the Additional Manuscripts of the British Museum. The text says that a curious view of the manners and a lurid light on the diplomacy of the middle of the eighteenth century are gained.
A quoted account says Pelham replied that it was Young Glengarry he spoke of, for that he came to him offering his most faithful and loyal services to the Government in any shape they thought proper. One letter speaks of a Regiment of as good men as ever was levied in North Britain, and of the Rank of full Colonell, the nomenation of his Officers, and suitable levie Mony.
