About this book
Paris under the Commune, or The Seventy-Three Days of the Second Siege, is by John Leighton, F.S.A., London, 1871. Its title page promises numerous illustrations, sketches taken on the spot and portraits from the original photographs.
One passage lists what its writer says socialism, the Red Republic, would do to the tricolour, the Column Vendôme and the Académie. Another is an address to Frenchmen against signing an armistice. An address to Paris pictures the city taking up English fashions, mushroom-shaped hats and crinoline. A further passage deals with statements about money found in the possession of Madame Leroy and mentions the police inspector M. Laudon and Urbain.
