Selections from Early Writers

Published by Macmillan in 1893, Selections from Early Writers Illustrative of Church History to the Time of Constantine was compiled by Henry Melvill Gwatkin (1844-1916), the Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Cambridge and a leading authority on the Arian controversy. The collection prints documents from Christianity’s first three centuries in their original Greek and Latin with English translations on facing pages, so students could work with or without the classical languages. Excerpted writers include the church fathers Irenaeus and Origen, with the record carried down to the reign of Constantine. Revised editions followed in 1897 and after, and the book served for decades as a standard sourcebook in theology courses. It remains a compact entry point into the primary records of the early church. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
